Gestational diabetes and your bitch

Many people don't realise that dogs suffer with diabetes at all, but did you know that they can also suffer from gestational diabetes? Though rare as a breeder it is something you should be aware o and be able to spot the symptoms in your bitch, early symptoms include, excessive thirst, excessive urination, dehydration, excessive hunger, weight loss, lack of energy/lethargy/tiredness, disorientation, and vomiting. Her urine may be pale and have a sweet smell, you may also see signs of cataracts and glaucoma if left untreated it can lead to blindness, seizures, and coma. At the first signs of symptoms, you should consult your vet immediately, treatment may include daily insulin injections and diet management. There is no reason with carful management she would carry the pups to term and as with humans it usually resolves after birth, but you should consider spaying her as it's likely to reoccur in any subsequent pregnancies.
